Wales v Russia

The pressure is all on Wales as they prepare to play host to Russia in a Group 4 World Cup qualifier. A win is the only result that will keep Wales alive.

The Dragons come into this contest in 4th place of Group 4 with 9 points from their 7 matches. Wales have won 3 matches while losing 4 and sit 9 points behind 2nd place Russia for the playoff spot, with Finland 4 points ahead in 3rd place. John Toshack’s squad are coming off of a 0-1 win away to Azerbaijan in June which kept their faint hopes of qualification alive. David Edwards was the goal scorer on that occasion.

The visiting Russians have a chance to clinch 2nd place in Group 4 if they are able to win this match and get a favorable result from Finland’s contest. A draw by Russia would see Wales eliminated. Dutch manager Guus Hiddink has his team just 1 point behind 1st place Germany with 18 points and their lead over 3rd place Finland is 5 points. Russia were winners at home this past Saturday by a score of 3-0 over Liechtenstein with Berezutski and Pavlyuchenko scoring the goals.
