The Saints have been improving in league play as they were able to hold out for a draw away from home on Wednesday before holding serve at home on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Hearts at McDiarmid Park. Kenny Deuchar was the goal scorer for the winners. The victory leaves St. Johnstone in 8th place of the Scottish Premier League with 23 points, 4 points behind the 7th place Aberdeen with one game in hand on them. The side managed by Derek McInnes were able to advance to this stage of the competition following victories over Stenhousemuir, Arbroath, Hibernian and Dundee United.
The league leading Rangers have 54 points and hold a 10 point edge over the 2nd place Celtic. On Saturday they defeated Falkirk at home in convincing fashion by a score of 3-0 at Ibrox. Davis, Fleck and Whittaker were the goal scorers for Walter Smith’s side. The Teddy Bears were able to reach this stage of the tournament as a result of wins over Queen of the South and Dundee.
