Formerly the UEFA Cup, the UEFA Europa League’s inaugural season will feature more than 50 of the continent’s top clubs fighting for the right to play in the tournament final on May 12, 2010 in Hamburg.
Last year’s final in Istanbul provided the perfect cap to a crazy tournament. Ukrainian side FC Shakhtar Donetsk brought home its first European trophy after upsetting Werder Bremen 2-1 in extra time. The champions had already proved their mettle by ousting Tottenham Hotspur FC, PFC CSKA Moskova, Olympique de Marseille, and Ukrainian arch-rivals Dynamo Kyiv. The silver medalists also created a stir on their way to the finals by upending tournament favorites AC Milan.

This year’s UEFA Europa League tournament features some of Europe’s best clubs. The top 15 slots in the competition will be filled by teams eliminated from the Champion’s League’s third round, so stay-tuned to see which teams will be added!
And don’t forget, last-year’s runner-up, Werder Bremen, AEK Athens from Greece, and Portugal’s Benefica will all be participating in this year’s tournament.
